Windows 8 Guidelines for Social Media

Microsoft had to dramatically rethink how Windows and other services, like social networks, would work out of the box. Previous versions of Windows didn't have any social network integration with non-Microsoft products. There was always Windows Live Messenger, but it wasn't included in the operating system nor did it integrate with any service other than Microsoft's own. Windows 8 completely scraps that paradigm and includes great applications that integrate with just about every major social network and service.

Take the Photos app for example. Once you log into with your Microsoft Live account, all the social networks that you've linked to it previously will show up. Photos from your Facebook, Flickr, and SkyDrive are automatically populated in the app. No more signing into each account every time you set up a new computer. This makes setting up a new computer as simple as logging in. All of your networks and settings will be synced.

Let's take a deeper look at how Microsoft has integrated social media and other services in Windows 8.

SkyDrive:

SkyDrive will be the core service that offers storage and sync between computers. If you use sync documents with SkyDrive, they will sync between machines so you have the most recent copy of every file available to you without having to manage multiple document libraries.

SkyDrive even powers sync between applications. Microsoft Office 2013 features sync for documents, settings, and templates so that your session from any computer using Office will remain the same. There will be no more headaches about not having a specific template or setting enabled at a different machine.

People

The People is a dramatic addition to Windows 8. It combines all of your contacts from your social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter; but also includes contacts from Exchange so you have a unified hub of all your contacts. Microsoft has done a good job of making large contact lists manageable. You can quickly search for a specific contact. Clicking on a contact will not only bring up their information but will give you their latest tweets and Facebook status updates.
Perhaps the most useful feature within the People app is the 'What's new' tab where it will present all of your contacts tweets and updates. This is a great way to catch up on what your contacts are up to without having to download an additional application from the Windows Store. Twitter lovers will be happy to know that you can favorite, retweet and reply to all within the app. Although 3rd party Twitter apps like MetroTwit might work and look better, it's nice to see Microsoft bake this into Windows 8.

Photos:
The Photos app integrates with all the services that support photo sharing like Facebook and Flickr. This is great as it will populate your new Windows 8 machine with all your photos without having to transfer photos between machines. Flickr photos loaded up quickly and flicked back and forth smoothly. Facebook photos, on the other hand, crashed the Photos app repeatedly for me. Hopefully Microsoft polishes the app before Windows 8 releases.

Sharing Application:
One of the best features of Windows 8 is its ability to share content between applications. Developers are given access to sharing menus so that they can build sharing features to their apps. If you're in the News application and see an interesting story that you want to share, pull up the Windows charms (read my Windows 8 controls guide if you don't know how to do this) and choose which application you want to share to.
After choosing a specific app, you will be able to share the story within the app or a new application will open up. Sharing with the People app allowed me to use Twitter and Facebook from within the News app without pushing me into People app to do the sharing. Apple's OS X Mountain Lion operating system attempts to make sharing easier for users but hasn't even released its Facebook sharing features that it announced months ago. Windows makes sharing much easier for developers to integrate into the operating system.

Windows 8 RTM: First Impressions

Finally , the wait is over and super excited to get my hands on Windows 8 RTM..  And really lucky to get it before Windows 8 global release on October 26. You too can get it for free by participating in Windows 8 Utshav @ MIC or in your own college from MIC Nepal.

If you are expecting drastic changes from the release preview, you are going to be disappointed. Windows 8 is definitely improvement over Release Preview but there are not feature additions besides vastly improved Windows 8 apps, stability & bug fixes.

The set up was really quick in less than 30 minutes on my PC. And when I signed in with my Microsoft account, I was surprised that all my data, apps, IE settings and lock screen wallpaper were synced up.

Windows 8 gives your old PC new life

When I first heard about Windows 8, I was like time to upgrade my PC. But I was actually surprised to know that with Windows 8 runs better than Windows 7 on same hardware. And what's more interesting is it boots in less than 8 seconds if it gets the right hardware.  On old PCs too, Windows 8 boots faster than Windows 7 and is responsive, fast and fluid.

New start screen patterns

Now you can choose from 20 design patterns to make your start screen and visual. ( My Windows was not activated so I could not try them)

Windows 8 Store and apps

Till Release Preview, all apps in the Store were free. Now you also can look for paid apps.  But  I think it is only available for US (for now) since there was no way to change country in Payment options.

There are handful of beautiful apps to play or work with. And I hope by the general availability of Windows 8, there will be enough apps to compete with apple store. Also, Microsoft's apps like Mail, People, Music, Video and SkyDrive which were in app preview are now feature complete and have nice improvements over the Release Preview.

Windows 8 desktop gets metro look

No surprises here. As announced, aero is removed and replaced with simple colors and flat look. I was actually fan of aero but I am not missing it now  :)

Bing gets visual with Windows 8

Bing search late comer to bing apps is what makes RTM  version special..As other Windows 8 apps, Bing search provides  full and immersive experience free from chrome and tools.  I never though that searching on web could be so awesome and beautiful.  With the bing app on Windows 8, searching via browser on google and even bing.com feels outdated.  (Note: Scroll via mouse to see different Bing Wallpapers)

 Internet Explorer 10

Internet Explorer for me too was the browser I loved to hate. I even had speed and hang issues in Internet Explorer 9. But Internet Explorer 10 is just fast and fluid. Its is not different in look and feel from IE 9 but definitely better. And I prefer IE desktop to metro version on my desktop.  And One thing that surprised me was now Internet Explorer has auto correct that automatically corrects your common typing mistakes. And I am not sure if it was available in previous versions.

Advantage and Disadvantages of Internet Explorer 9

Advantages

HTML5:
One of the biggest advantage of Internet Explorer 9 over other Internet Explorer version is the support for HTML5! This feature has been widely advertised by Microsoft. HTML5 lets you play video and sound without the need of another plugin or software (like Adobe Flash player). It also allow you to do other things including play cool games without the need of flash.

Speed:
Another advantage of Internet Explorer 9 (or IE9 for short) is the speed. It has been widely touted by Microsoft to be faster and slicker than other browsers. And Microsoft have come up on that promise. Its certainly faster than previous Internet Explorer 8.

Crash/hang tolerant:
With previous Internet Explorers, a hanging tab can bring down the entire browser. But with IE9, only the tag hang. You can work with any other tags.

Disadvantages
Broken websites:
Because IE9 is more standards than previous Internet Explorer, sites not written in standards complient HTML can look "broken" in Internet Explorer 9. For example, sites may look extremely narrow or plugins may fail to load. This can be solved by adding this tag immediately below the "<head>" tag:

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=?" />

and replace the question mark (?) with the last Internet Explorer browser that works with your website. For example, if you tested your page using IE9, add If you add this to your meta tags:
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=8" />.

Favorites:
When using ctrl+b to orginize favorites, deleting a favorite does not place it in the recycle bin to restore later. In addition, IE9 does NOT confirm whether you want to delete a favorite.

Pinned tab:
In pinned tab mode, other add-ons like WOT and Norton Safe Web does not appear.

No track filtering:
We can't import our custom list of block sites. There are even other providers that make .xml lists to import. I can't find any option to import those rules! Currently the no track does not extend to google ads.

Default features:
As mentioned in the previous blog post, Microsoft have disabled features by default that we have grown so used to with Internet Explorer 8. For example, system sounds. In IE8, when a popup is blocked, a sound would play. But IE9 is amazingly quiet. You would have to manually enable that option in the advanced tab under internet options. Furthermore, QuickTabs is disabled by default. To enable it go to internet options and click on settings next to tabs. You would find the option there.

Windows Vista/Windows 7:
Internet Explorer 9 will only work on Windows Vista and Windows 7. Those with older Windows operating system (like Windows XP) is out of luck. They would need to get other browsers like Firefox to get comparable features to IE9

How to Convert a FAT or FAT32 Volume to NTFS in Windows 7

Before you start to convert a FAT or FAT32 volume to NTFS, please consider the following limitations and requirements:

  • UDF and CDfs file systems are only used with optical media and cannot be converted to NTFS.
  • FAT12 is the only format used on floppy diskettes (as if these are used anymore ). This does not apply to a USB flash key though.
  • The conversion to NTFS is a one-way process. After you convert a drive or a partition to NTFS, you cannot convert it back to FAT or to FAT32 unless you format it again as FAT or FAT32.
  • The convert command requires that you have enough free space on the drive or on the partition that you want to convert to be able to convert it. If Convert.exe determines that there is not sufficient free space on the volume, it will not convert the volume.
  • If the files are being used on the volume that you are trying to convert, then you will be prompted with:
  • "Convert cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Convert may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? <Y/N>"
  • Quit all the programs that are using the files on the drive, and then type Y at the command prompt to convert the drive to NTFS.
  • If the drive or partition volume that you are trying to convert is in use, then you will be prompted with:
  • "Convert cannot gain exclusive access to the drive letter drive, so it cannot convert it now. Would you like to schedule it to be converted the next time the system restarts? <Y/N>"
  • To resolve this issue, type Y at the command prompt. The volume or drive will be converted to NTFS the next time that you restart the computer.
HOW TO DO:

1. To Use a Elevated Command Prompt in Windows
         A) Open a Elevated command prompt.

         B) Go to step 3.
2. To Use a Command Prompt at Boot
         A) Open a command prompt at boot.

         B) In the command prompt, type diskpart and press Enter. (see screenshot below)

         C) In the command prompt, type list volume and press Enter. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: This will let you see what the drive letter is for the drive that you want to connvert since it may     not always be the same drive letter that it is in Windows.

        D) After making note of the drive letter, type exit and press Enter. (see screenshot below)

        E) Continue on to step 3 to convert the drive.

3. In the command prompt, type convert drive letter: /fs:ntfs and press Enter. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: Substitute drive letter for the drive letter of the FAT or FAT32 drive or partition that you want to convert to NTFS. For example, I want to convert my USB flash key with the drive letter G: , so I would type convert g: /fs:ntfs and press enter.

4. If prompted to Enter current volume label for drive (drive letter) (ex: G: ), then enter the name (ex: NEW VOLUME) of this drive letter as it is displayed in the Computer window and press Enter. (see screenshots below)

5. When the conversion to NTFS is complete, you receive the Conversion complete message. (See screenshot above)
NOTE: This may take a while to convert depending on full and large the drive is. It may also seem like it has hung at points, but be patient and let it finish.

6. Close the command prompt.
NOTE: If you used a command prompt at boot, then also close the System Recovery Options window and restart the computer.

How to use Linux While using Windows Virtually:

1. First of all you will need to download a software which will make a virtual OS inside another OS. I'll use here an open source free software known as VMware Player Download it here.

2. After downloading install it and then a desktop shortcut icon will be placed at your desktop.

3. After that download the version of the Linux which you want to emulate/virtualize in your Windows. Lets say, its backtrack 5. Download an .iso copy of it from here.

4. After downloading place it somewhere in your hard disk. And then open VMware Player from desktop. From the top toolbar select File>Create a New Virtual Machine and then select the second option installer disc image file (.iso) and give the path of the .iso file of the backtrack 5 through below. Like this:-

5. Now select what I have selected below in screen shot. Like select Linux and in kernel version select 2.6 as Backtrack 5 uses this kernel version. And press next.

6. After that choose whatever name you want for this virtual machine in next step like I have used "Wamiq Ali Back Track 5" and then choose the path below where you want to save it.

7. After that hit next and then again next. Now click finish after that.

8. Your virtual machine is successfully created. It will be launched. And select the first boot option in the Linux Backtrack 5 boot menu as the virtual machine is played. As shown in screen shot below:-

8. Rest of the entries have already been told in previous tutorials that how can you handle them and can get logged into backtrack 5. But I repeat that:-
Type startx after getting booted from first option in boot menu and hit enter.
If required for user name that is root and password is toor. So, enjoy using Bt5 under Windows.

Surfing on the internet, the definition has obviously changed. We need fast, secure and cheap connection. Nepal is certainly having problems with this changed – FSC definition. My friend who works on an ISP enjoys FSC but me….. I calculate bytes … recharge my balance regularly … do not enjoy multimedia … do not download/update software…. check mail…. search … chat……
If we have the NTC CDMA phone and wish to connect internet and are not aware of the ways of keeping the unnecessary bytes transfer in control then your wallet is certainly emptying fast.
10 ways to keep your CDMA charges low:

1) No multimedia thru net. Graphics, animation, images, videos, audio; Disable all.
2) Browse mobile pages if available.
3) Use Outlook for checking and sending mail.
4) Search tags should be as small as possible and find your site in first click. Do not go by many sites for one query.
5) Do not delete your temporary internet files and cookies unless it is necessary.
6) Do not log out from sites.
7) Do not make automatic updates on.
8) Do not download files without knowing the size of the files.
9) Disable pop-ups and JavaScript ads like Google Adsense.
10) Use older versions of messengers. They are typically free from heavy ads and so on.
Give suggestions and comments. If u have any idea about the topic then please do post.

Find, Move or Delete Duplicate Files on Your PC

I do my best to have files on my PC organized and sorted so I know where every file is. And yet, when I ran this free software, during 3 minutes it found 1038 duplicate files on my system totaling 39 GBs. What a surprise! Imagine then how many duplicate files you have if you don’t pay much attention to organizing files on your PC?
Removing duplicate files from your PC will boost your system performance and speed it up immensely. Whether it be photos, mp3 files, text documents… Removing those files will enable you to have more disk space, reduce antivirus scan time, reduce the time it takes to defragment your hard drive and help you easily organize your files.
DuplicateFinder is a freeware program that will detect all the cloned files that you might have on your computer.

DuplicateFinder uses optimized detection algorithms and file filters so the scanning time is greatly minimized. The detected files can be removed in no time with the help of the automatic file selector and the predefined set of actions (copying, moving or deleting).

I must say it was pretty fast and efficient. Now I have additional 39 Gigabytes of space available when I cleaned up the unnecessary files in just 3 minutes. Of course, if you don’t want to delete them right away, you can always group them into a folder using “Move” option, and there you can see whether you want to keep some of them.

It works on Windows NT 4.0, 2K, XP, Vista, and Windows 7.
You can download Duplicate Finder http://www.bytessence.com/bdf.html

[How to] Migrate to Windows 7 from Windows XP in simple manner

Microsoft released Windows 7 in 2009 and over the two years large number of users have migrated from Windows XP to Windows 7. This gives more concrete reason to migrate to newer platform from Windows XP. In this article we will discuss about the various way to migrate from windows xp to windows 7 in easiest manner. We will further take stock of the different ways that will help organizations in deploying Windows 7 flawlessly in their enterprise environment.

There are various ways to migrate from Windows XP to Windows 7. You can use the following tools to successfully migrate from Windows XP to 7 Migration:
  •     Windows Upgrade Advisor
  •     Windows Easy Transfer
  •     USMT 4.0 & USMT 4.0 using Hard-Link Migration

These are some of the ways in which you can take the backup of the your data in Windows XP and after migrating to Windows 7, you can restore that data using any of the tools mentioned above. However, even before you plan for a migration, make sure that you have a data backup in case of an unsuccessful migration.

First and foremost thing is to check whether  your machine is capable of handling Windows 7 or not. You can visit Microsoft’s website to identify the system requirements for Windows 7. The most preferred way to see the actual requirements and validate if the computer is capable of running Windows 7 is running Windows Upgrade Advisor.

Windows Upgrade Advisor

First download the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. Once the tool is downloaded, run the tool and see the report that will give detailed hardware information and accordingly you can plan for Windows 7 Migration.

Windows Easy Transfer

Windows Easy Transfer is free tool that is designed to take the user data and settings as a backup and store it on external USB device. This is recommended if you are migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 on same machine. If there is network connectivity between the old computer and the new computer then you can directly transfer the data over the network. Lastly, if you have Windows Easy Transfer cable then you can use it to transfer data from the old computer to the new computer.

Once you are done with the data backup using Windows Easy Transfer, you can install Windows 7 on the computer. After the successful installation of Windows 7, you can run the Windows Easy Transfer on Windows 7 and restore the user data and settings back to the same computer.

Things to note, Windows Easy Transfer:

does not take the backup of Program Files
does not transfer the data from 64-bit Windows to 32-bit Windows

You can download Windows Easy Transfer for Windows XP and Windows Vista http://www.windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/windows-easy-transfer

Install Android apps in Desktop [how to]

If you are using Android Smartphone and are in love with its applications and games,  you may want to use it on your desktop too. The other way, even if you don’t have Android phones and you may still like to enjoy its applications. In whatever cases there is a solution, an application called “BlueStacks – app player for Windows” will fulfill your wish. BlueStacks apps might be the great options for people who like to enjoy Android apps in desktop and don’t have an Android phone and Android powered tablet.  All you need to do is download and install BlueStacks application on your PC . This application is for free and you can find it in Google Play. BlueStacks, app player for Windows, is thus one of the best simulators for testing out Android apps.

After installation, when you run an application it automatically switch into the full screen mode.  At bottom you see the Menu, Rotate, Zoom and all Apps buttons in the center with app navigation and close buttons at either side. The zoom button switches the apps between full mode and standard mode. You can also download additional Android apps from BlueStacks channel. For this click on Apps button and then get more apps.

If you are using for the first time then you have to login with you Facebook account. Once you logged in then choose and subscribe the apps which you want.

The most exciting and interesting feature of this application is that you can synchronize the apps from your Android device to PC by using Bluestacks Cloud Connect. For this you have to install Bluestacks Cloud Connect apps on you mobile from Google Play. Once you have done with installation, to receive the PIN, open the Cloud Connect page on your PC’s browser, there you find Phone Pin of 9 digit. Now open the apps on your mobile and enter the pin no then you are almost done. Now select the apps which you want to sync with your PC but be careful while choosing the apps because there is a limit upto 35 applications at a time.

You might have to wait for some time for the apps to sync with your PC. When the  process is completed, you can run all your Android device’s apps on your PC. Limits maybe sensor and location aware apps which might search for the same in your local windows. All Android apps will be installed locally in your windows program files folder.

Searching your history in Chrome is fairly useful, but it could use some improvement. Enhanced History Options is an extension that gives greater flexibility in searching and clearing your history.

Finding a page you visited last week, month, or year can be close to impossible, especially if you're diligent about clearing your browser history. Enhanced History Options is an extension for Chrome that lets you improve your history search and customize what you clear. Here's how to use it:
  • Install Enhanced History Options here.
  • Restart Chrome.
  • Press Ctrl+H to open your history. A new tab opens featuring Enhanced History Options. You can sort by title, number of visits, or date of most recent visit, and search easily from the top bar by keyword and date.
  • You have new clearing options, too. Of course, you can still clear all history with one click over on the right side of the page, but you can also clear a portion of your history by date range or keyword.
If you want to track your file and browser history in one place in Windows, read this post. Firefox has an add-on that allows threaded history viewing.

The guide to password security (and why you should care):
In a better world, vulnerable accounts like banks, medical records, e-mail, and cloud drives would be protected with biometric systems. A swipe of a finger or a retina scan would allow access to your most important data.
Alas, eight-or-more-character passwords still dominate Web service log-ins. Anything from your investment portfolio to your Facebook account is simply accessed with an e-mail address (or username) and a few characters.
Yet, many Internet users continue to use easy-to-guess passwords like "123456," "qwerty," or their first names. Even worse, users repeat the same password (or a variation of one) across many accounts, putting themselves at greater risk of being hacked.
From password creation to password management, follow this guide to ensure your data is safe, secure, and prepared to withstand a security breach.

How are passwords exposed?
Before we dive into the how-tos of creating secure passwords, it's important to understand why you need a supersecure password to begin with. After all, you might be thinking, "Who would want to hack little old me?"
There are a few ways your account passwords can be compromised.
Someone's out to get you.
Enemies you've created, exes from your past, a nosy mother, an intrusive spouse -- there are many people who might want to take a peek into your personal life. If these people know you well, they might be able to guess your e-mail password and use password recovery options to access your other accounts. (Can you tell I'm speaking from experience?)

You become the victim of a brute-force attack.
Whether a hacker attempts to access a group of user accounts or just yours, brute-force attacks are the go-to strategy for cracking passwords. These attacks work by systematically checking all possible passphrases until the correct one is found. If the hacker already has an idea of the guidelines used to create the password, this process becomes easier to execute.

There's a data breach.
Sony, which wasn't careful in encrypting its user data, was targeted in a series of attacks where hackers (Lulzsec) exposed more than 1 million e-mail addresses, passwords, and accompanying data like home addresses and phone numbers. Most recently, a security hole was found in Max OS X's FileVault, where users' log-in passwords were available in plain text.

What makes a good password?
Although data breaches are out of your control, it's still imperative to create passwords that can withstand brute-force attacks and relentless frenemies. Avoiding both types of attacks is dependent on the complexity of your password.
Ideally, each of your passwords would be at least 16 characters, and contain a combination of numbers, symbols, uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and spaces. The password would be free of repetition, dictionary words, usernames, pronouns, IDs, and any other predefined number or letter sequences.

The geeky and security-savvy community evaluates password strength in terms of "bits," where the higher the bits, the stronger the password. An 80-bit password is more secure than a 30-bit password, and has a complex combination of the aforementioned characters. As a result, an 80-bit password would take years longer to crack than a 30-bit password.
Ideal passwords, however, are a huge inconvenience. How can we be expected to remember 80-bit (12-character) passwords for each of our various Web accounts?

Creating secure passwords
In his guide to mastering the art of passwords, Dennis O'Reilly suggests creating a system that both allows you to create complex passwords and remember them.
For example, create a phrase like "I hope the Giants will win the World Series in 2013!" Then, take the initials of each word and all numbers and symbols to create your password. So, that phrase would result in this: IhtGwwtWSi2013!
The next option is to use a password generator, which come in the form of offline programs and Web sites. The best choice here would be to use an offline generator, like the appropriately named Random Password Generator, so that your created passwords can't be intercepted.
While you experiment with different passwords, use a tool like How Secure is my Password? to find out if it can withstand any cracking attempts. This particular Web site rates your password's strength based on how long it would take to crack. If it's too easy, the meter will let you know what elements you can add (or remove) to strengthen it.

Microsoft offers its own online strength checker, and promises that the form is completely secure. Mac users can use the built-in Password Assistant to check their passwords' security.
Keeping track of secure passwords
If you follow one of the most important commandments of passwords, you know that you absolutely must have a unique password for every service you use. The logic is simple: if you recycle the same password (or a variation of it), and a hacker cracks one account, he or she will be able to access the rest of your accounts.
Obviously, you can't be expected to memorize dozens of crazy, 16-character-long passwords.
This guide thoroughly explores the different options for managing your passwords, including things like storing them on a USB drive, and even writing them down. Although it's ultimately up to you, he presents a strong argument for using the ol' sticky note method.

Using a password manager
Password managers store all of your passwords for you and fill out your log-in forms so that you don't have to do any memorizing. One of the most secure and intuitive password managers is LastPass.

LastPass is unique in that it is made of two parts, coupling an offline program with a browser plug-in. All encryption and decryption happens on your computer so that your data doesn't travel over the Internet and is not stored on any servers.
As you create new accounts or change your passwords, LastPass will ask you if you'd like to create them using its password generator, which is designed to generate hard-to-crack passwords.
If you choose those route, you'll still have to remember at least one thing: your master LastPass password. Do be sure to make it extra secure, and composed of at least 12 characters to ensure that it's not vulnerable to any brute-force attacks.
It's worth noting, however, that just like any software, LastPass is vulnerable to security breaches. In 2011, LastPass experienced a security breach, but users with strong master passwords were not affected.
